Heathkit H8 Computer

1978: Heathkit H8 Unassembled Kit Computer

The Heathkit H8 computer shipped in January 1978 at a price of $375 from the famous electronic kit maker in unassembled form, requiring the purchaser to solder the pieces together. In this respect the H8 was like the first Altair systems, but being a couple years later, had a slightly more advanced front panel. Instead of flip switches and on/off LED's the H8 had a numeric keypad capable of hexadecimel input and a 9-character 7-segment LED display. The basic system used octal in the display, but a wide variety of expansion options became available to fill the unused card slots in the chassis of the machine.
