CED in the History of Media Technology

Television sales really took off after World War II, and by 1950 broadcast TV was well established. The show lineup in 1953 included the first instance of interactive TV, a full thirty years before RCA released their first interactive CED titles. This was a children's TV show called Winky Dink and You that was viewed while using the play kit shown above. The kit contained crayons and a clear plastic overlay that was put on the TV screen. During the show viewers would help Winky Dink escape from various jams by drawing the necessary object on the overlay, which might be a rope, ladder, bridge, etc. The show was an annoyance to some parents when their kids would draw directly on the TV screen without using an overlay.
