Hi Tom,

Great web site, great newsletter! Some things I'd like to see:

Has anybody saved their CED collection to Vcd? (seems like a natural. Both
have the same 60 minute per disc format and skips could be edited out). Tell
us how you did it, and how did it work out.

Has anybody interfaced with the data port on the 400 machine? Format?
Language?

Thanks,

Stan

Subject: Fabulous Thrift Store Find!

Just a few months ago, I was in Birmingham, Al. visiting family over my
vacation. I really enjoy going to thrift stores, and since I have become
addicted to CED's I visit them on a regular basis. When I visited one thrift
store called "The Exchange Club" I went to their electronic section which was
quite large and proceeded to scan their piles of DOA Vcr's. One of the VCR's
looked odd so I took a closer look.....It turned out to be a SJT200 in
not-so-good working order. The front panel was open suggesting a broken belt or
no belt at all, and the power cord had been removed via wire cutters. Despite
it's problems I purchased it- and at $5.41, it was a bargain! I replaced the
belt (The old one had turned to goo and stained my hands for days) with a
rubber band and bought a new power cord fron Radio Shack. The unit is now up
and running, with a proper belt I ordered from Tom. I have been enjoying the
SJT200 along with my SGT100, which I acquired off of E-bay. Thanks for
printing my story! CED forever! Forrest Proctor

Please put me on the mailing list. I got the
collectors CD for Xmas and learned about this list
from that. How does the cover of that CD work? I took
the card out and it looks like a brown blob, but
couldnt see any colors through the clear top. how does
it make those colors?

Subject: That '80s Show

Hello All:

One week from today at 8 PM a new series "That '80s Show" will air on Fox:

http://www.that80sshow.tv

This seems to be in the same vein as the series "That '70s Show," and if so, it
will probably be technology friendly if not entirely accurate chronologically.
During the previews there's a scene in a record store where an item that looks
like a CED can be seen on the right side in this captured image:

http://www.cedmagic.com/misc/tv-movies/that-80s-show-01.jpg It may just be wishful thinking that the item with the yellow-lettered black label and surrounding white border is a CED, but perhaps a better view can be had when the show airs. A couple of years ago Fox had another 80's series "Freaks & Geeks" that began in September 1980 and made an effort to be chronologically accurate. I contacted the producer of that show about donating a CED player for the possibility that it might appear in one of the living rooms on the show. But the show got canceled after little more than a dozen episodes, so it didn't make it to the March '81 time frame when the player could have appeared. --Tom ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 Jan 2002 13:15:48 -0800 From: James Curiel <jacuriel> To: digest@cedmagic.com Subject: Re: CED Digest Vol. 7 No. 2 Dear All, If you are selling on e-bay, some tips include preaching to the unconverted to increase the number of bidders. That means advertising in more than the CED category. It also brings more people into the CED fold and makes the format more viable by generating interest in the medium. Also, I have written about how to use a Nitty Gritty Record cleaning machine to clean your discs and prolong the life of your stylus. I may have inadvertantly forgotten to said to use a carbon fiber brush to brush away lint that is left by the cleaning lip of the machine. For those that can't bring themselves to spill the dollars for one of these machines, you may try using a carbon fiber brush by itself. I use the Pickering carbon fiber brushes from Germany, and they go for between $9-12. I have machines on e-bay right now that have new load belts, the shafts have been lubed, and I have adjusted the height of the platter. They also have new stylus in them. Most of these machines are SJT-90's that were purchased to be used in a hotel, but never were. So far, two of the machines have pulled well over 200, and two have gone for the 150 buy it now price. Contact me directly, at jacuriel@csus.edu, to purchase one for $150 plus shipping from Sacramento, California. I was successful in converting a CRK-33 RCA remote to use it as a CRK-34 for the SJT-300's using Tom's advice on changing the C1 capacitor. Thanks Tom. I encourage people to try it if they get a chance. I am getting a lot of e-mails on people wanting their machines fixed. Tom, is there any chance that a workshop could take place somewhere or via the web on fixing these machines? The repair section on the page is wonderful. I have a fair amount of luck with the J and K series, but the G and F ones are outside my forte. Also, where can one get some of the repair equipment like the adjustment guage for the F and G series. A workshop on how to use the oscillisope and other devices to identify what is wrong might be handy. Also, a list of shops that still repair these machines might be even better. Peace. signed James ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To: digest@cedmagic.com Date: Sat, 19 Jan 2002 21:31:41 -0800 From: "Tom Howe" <tom@cedmagic.com> Subject: Transfer Rod Cap and Receiver Spindle on J/K Players Hello All: A player problem that seems to be coming up more often in J/K CED players is a missing protective cap on the disc transfer rod. If the cap is missing, a little damage will be done to every disc inserted into the player. I have this part available along with installation instructions on this page:

http://www.cedmagic.com/tech-info/transfer-rod-cap/transfer-rod-cap.html That page also provides a picture of the receiver spindle, which is another part sometimes missing from J/K CED players. The absence of this part is tricky, because the player will still work without it, but the likelihood of a disc not falling flat onto the turntable increases. If you have this problem, check the player to make sure the receiver spindle is there. --Tom
